Overview
Light from Life
Step onto Tomales Bay at twilight and watch the landscape slowly disappear into darkness. As night settles over the water, each paddle stroke may awaken microscopic bioluminescent organisms, creating flashes, trails, and shimmering blue-green light around the kayak.
On favorable evenings, paddle strokes, drifting eelgrass, swimming fish, and the wake behind the kayak can reveal living light. Guides share the science of bioluminescence along with the wildlife, ecology, and natural and cultural history of Tomales Bay.
The experience is as much about stillness and connection as it is about the glow: stars overhead, quiet water beneath you, and the rare chance to encounter the bay after dark.
*Year round subject to tides, weather, and dark nights
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon. Its presence and brightness vary with water conditions, tides, moonlight, weather, season, and other ecological factors. Every tour offers a guided nighttime paddle, but the intensity or visibility of the glow cannot be guaranteed.
