What is Kayak + Connect?

Kayak + Connect offers guided kayaking experiences that bring people closer to nature, to one another, and to themselves. Through wildlife tours, bioluminescence paddles, retreats, and mindful group experiences, we create space for wonder, connection, and care for the places we explore. We also offer overnight kayaking and camping adventures, thoughtfully prepared lunches and dinners, and domestic and international backpacking journeys.

Our experiences are for individuals, families, friends, schools, teams, and organizations seeking meaningful time in nature. Whether you are new to kayaking or an experienced paddler, we welcome anyone curious about connection, wildlife, wonder, and the restorative power of being on the water.

Do I need kayaking experience?

Accepted Answer

No prior kayaking experience is needed for most of our adventures. Our experienced guides provide clear instruction, safety guidance, and support throughout the journey. Some overnight or advanced backpacking experiences may have additional fitness or experience requirements, which will always be noted in the trip details.

What ages can participate?

For our bioluminescence tours, guests must be 13 or older because we cross the bay at night. For daytime tours, children must generally be at least 7 years old and weigh 50 pounds or more. Exceptions may be considered with advance approval. We love helping families enjoy the water together, while always putting safety first and creating happy new memories along the way.

What does a typical experience include?

Each experience includes expert guidance, safety instruction, quality kayaking equipment, and plenty of time to explore, learn, and connect. Depending on the adventure, it may also include wildlife interpretation, meals, camping gear, workshops, or other thoughtfully planned touches. What should I bring and wear?

Dress in comfortable, quick-drying layers and avoid cotton. Synthetic fabrics, fleece, or wool are best, with a light water-resistant outer layer for wind or splashes. Bring a water bottle, sun protection for daytime tours, and a warm beanie for evening or nighttime paddles. Our guides will help launch you, so your feet will usually stay dry, but please wear shoes that can handle getting a little wet. Watch our short video for the full guide.

Will I get wet?

You are not likely to get very wet. Our closed-deck kayaks, spray skirts, and splash jackets help keep you comfortable and dry, although a little sea spray is always possible. You may also enjoy some salty sea air, or even work up a bit of a sweat—so bringing a change of clothes for after the tour is always a good idea.

What wildlife might we see?

Depending on the season and location, we may encounter harbor seals, river otters, bat rays, leopard sharks, white pelicans, and many other shorebirds and seabirds. Along the shoreline, we may also spot tule elk, bobcats, coyotes, and deer. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and every paddle brings its own surprises. Our guides help guests observe animals respectfully and from a safe distance.

What happens if the weather changes?

Weather on the bay can change quickly, so our guides closely monitor conditions before and throughout every experience. If conditions are not safe or comfortable, we may adjust the route, delay, reschedule, or offer a credit or refund. Your safety will always come first.

Do you offer private groups?

Yes. Most of our experiences can be arranged privately for families, friends, celebrations, schools, teams, and organizations. We can also create a customized experience based on your group's interests, size, and needs.

Yes. We create customized programs for companies, leadership teams, schools, nonprofits, and retreat groups. Experiences may combine kayaking, nature-based learning, mindfulness, communication, empathy, and team connection, with each program tailored to your group's goals, size, and needs.

Where do experiences launch?

Most of our experiences launch from Heart's Desire Beach, Miller Boat Launch, or Drakes Estero. We also offer select adventures from additional locations throughout West Marin and southern Marin, depending on the experience, season, and conditions.

How physically demanding are the experiences?

Accepted Answer

You do not need to be especially fit to enjoy most of our experiences. They are designed for a wide range of ages, abilities, and fitness levels, with a comfortable pace and support from our guides. Some longer adventures, including our six-hour Drakes Estero journey, require more stamina, and any additional physical requirements will be clearly noted.

We do our best to accommodate mobility and accessibility needs whenever possible. Because launch sites, tides, terrain, and kayak entry can vary, we ask guests to contact us in advance so we can understand their needs and recommend the safest, most comfortable experience. Some locations may have limitations, but we will always be honest, thoughtful, and creative in exploring options.
